VOL - Honeysuckle phenology and fruit collection research
Honeysuckle phenology and fruit collection research website
MinnesotaMinnesota, MN 00000
Researchers at the University of Minnesota are studying the infestation of honeysuckle (Lonicera) species with the invasive insect pest spotted-wing Drosophila (SWD). The team is seeking volunteers to track flowering and fruit phenology of native and non-native honeysuckle species in Minnesota by submitting observations to iNaturalist from May-September 2025 to help them achieve timely collection of ripe fruit for analysis. Dedicated volunteers can also work with the team directly to assist in fruit collection. Here are some key details:
- There are eight native Lonicera species in Minnesota, as well as several non-native species (collectively called non-native bush honeysuckle).
- Researchers will use iNaturalist posts to determine timing of site visits across the state.
- Volunteer fruit collectors will be mailed collection materials and asked to sample populations of flagged, geolocated individuals that were previously sampled in 2024
