Join us for City Nature Challenge 2022. This international event is designed to document urban diversity. Our goal for the weekend is to get as many people out using iNaturalist, making observations as possible. This should be a great spot for birds, (think sandhill crane) trees and spring ephemerals. Plan to join the park biologist, Cody Carlstrom, and Minnesota Master Naturalist volunteers, Lisa Meyers-McClintock, Tammy Smith, LeAnn Plinske, and Cynthia McSherry for a fun day long outing Oak Savanna Learning Center. There are paved trails, with access to the indoors and flush toilets. Bring your charged cell phone with iNaturalist on it, snacks, water, and lunch. Come on out and say hello, come and go as you are able to participate.
The 30,700 acre refuge was established in 1965 at the urging of local conservationists and hunters interested in restoring the wildlife values of the St. Francis River Basin. Following that, the refuge became and remains the largest public land holding in Sherburne County. The refuge is now a wild remnant at the meeting of the western prairies and the northern woods, with oak savanna, prairie opening, forest, wetland and riverine habitats.
