2008 Master Naturalist Advanced Training Series
Class and Registration Information
The classes will have one 3 hour Wednesday evening class and a Saturday (8 hour) fieldtrip. The classes will be held at Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley (map attached.) Field trips will be within the seven county metro area. Carpooling will be encouraged. Participants should dress for the weather and expect to be hiking on uneven terrain. Fieldtrips will be postponed for severe weather.
The classes are limited to 25 participants (minimum of 10). Pre-registration is required at least 14 days prior to the class. Classes are $50.00 each or $250.00 for the entire series (if registered together).
Course Instructors:
Siah St. Clair
Siah has been a naturalist for over 35 years. He has been the Director of Springbrook Nature Center for 30 years where he works with environmental programs- with invasive species and urban wildlife control- maintaining a large display of reptiles- and with prairie- forest- and wetland management. He is a very experienced photographer in both film and digital formats. Siah is a trained Master Naturalist instructor.
John Moriarty
John has been wildlife biologist for 25 years. He has been the Natural Resources
Manager with Ramsey County Parks for 8 years where he is in charge of deer- prairie-
and invasive species management. Prior to that he worked for Three Rivers Park District.
John has written numerous publications on Minnesota Natural History- especially on
Reptiles and Amphibians. John is also a trained Master Naturalist instructor.

“Urban Grasslands” June 25 & 28
Management and plants of Metro Prairies
The Twin Cities have a variety of prairies from the St. Croix River to the Crow River.
Locations of the prairies along with their management and unique plants will be
highlighted. Field trip will include the largest prairie in the metro as well as some native
remnants.
“ Bothered by Buckthorn Sept 24 & 27
Management and Biology of Invasive Species
Invasive species of plants and animals are becoming an increasing problem in natural
habitats throughout the United States. We will discuss the biology and problems of
invasive species found in Minnesota. The field trip will cover species identification and
demonstrations of control.
“Geese- Deer- and Coyotes- oh My” (early November) (TBA)
Wildlife Management (Urban Deer)
An increasing number of wildlife species are adapting to urban habitats. Some of those
species have adapted too well and have become problems in some areas. The class will
discuss urban wildlife ranging from Bald Eagles and Ospreys to White-tailed Deer and
Canada Geese. Techniques on how to increase and reduce populations will be discussed.
The field trip will visit several sights where urban wildlife management is being
undertaken. This will include a deer check station.
