Students get the dirt on nature

Students in the Onamia School District got a little dirty Monday at the Northland Arboretum digging up black dirt, planting perennials in the arb's butterfly garden as part of the school's Mille Lacs Area Partners For Youth program.

Master Naturalist Pilot Class Underway at Fort Snelling

The inaugural course for the Minnesota Master Naturalist Program is underway at Fort Snelling State Park in St. Paul. The students are learning about natural and cultural history of the Big Woods, Big Rivers ecosystem of our state. The class started on September 15 and will run through December 1.
The pilot class has 23 students in it who are providing valuable feedback and comments as the program is rolled out.
The Big Woods, Big Rivers Class consists of 11 class periods and two field trips to learn more and provide students with hands on opportunities to put to practice the classroom learning.

Lots of people want to be Master Naturalists

A new Master Naturalist program that will be offered through the University of Minnesota Extension Service has drawn so much interest its pilot class scheduled for September is already full.
"Public reaction to the class has been outstanding," says Amy Rager, an assistant professor and extension service regional educator. "Lots of calls and e-mails tell us that citizens are excited about the program."
