“Measuring what’s in a forest can lead to a deeper appreciation”.

Understanding the diversity of tree species and their sizes can give insight into what kind of wildlife may be present, can inform forest stewardship planning, and leads to a deeper appreciation of forests.

Participants will learn how to set up and carry out a typical woodland inventory for a Minnesota forest. You will learn about the important things to look for and measure in a forest, be introduced to basic forest inventory equipment, and learn about the importance of woodland inventories.

Includes: The day will include indoor classroom activities (presentations, computer lab, and demonstration of equipment), outdoor field exercises (measurement of trees and observations of forests), a light breakfast, coffee, lunch, and snacks. Dress for September weather and bring a camera if you wish. Classroom materials and handouts will be provided.

Instructor Information

Stephan Carlson

Dr. Carlson has worked for the U of M Extension and the College of Food Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences for the last 28 years doing outreach and teaching classes in environmental education (EE) and environmental interpretation. He has worked in the fields of EE, outdoor recreation, informal science education and environmental interpretation for the past 40 years. In addition to his work teaching interpretation, he also teaches Science and Math summer school on the White Earth Indian Reservation. His research is on understanding the components that informal science experiences have on young people and how to develop quality programs that incorporate these components in environmental education.
