Curvy or Straight, Shallow or Deep, Narrow or Wide: Stream Shape and Function – All about Moving Water We have all been mesmerized by water burbling its way downstream, but those of us with an inquisitive scientist’s mind can’t help but have questions. Why are some streams curvy and others straight? Why are some deep and narrow while others are shallow and wide? What is ‘good habitat’, and how is it linked to the river’s shape? What kinds of fish live in this river? What causes stream bank erosion, and is it a bad thing? If these are questions that you want to know the answers to, this is the class for you! Join us for a fun and relaxing day learning about stream shape and function, while standing on the banks of the ever-intriguing Yellow Medicine River (or in the river if you so choose). We will have a stream simulation model to demonstrate specific processes like sediment movement and erosion, and we will explore the Yellow Medicine River to see the processes and the resulting features in ‘real life’. If time allows, we will sample fish, bugs and mussels from the river to study! Learning Objectives By the end of the day, participants will be able to: • Understand and explain to others what factors determine a river’s shape • Understand and explain to others the importance of connectivity in watersheds • Know what watershed they live in • Identify a variety of river habitats and discuss in broad terms the species that live there • Find and use a variety of resource tools discussed throughout the class. Note that this class is being offered in conjunction with Birds of the Prairie Sunday, August 11 so consider coming for the Streams class Saturday, camping overnight in the park (or at a nearby hotel), and staying for the Birds class Sunday. Space is limited, so register right away for either one or both!
br> If you get the coupon code from Facebook, you can register for the stream ecology workshop the day before and this advanced training for $80.00, or they are $50.00 each! Questions? Instructor Information

Karen Terry

My areas of expertise are rivers and the shapes of their channels, water quality impacts of land use decisions, and shoreline erosion control and prevention. I have a portable stream model (about 3'x7') that I use for demonstrations -- it works very well to show how river channels change over time.
